Southern Discomfort: Mixed Media Assemblage.

I am interested in exploring a Southern point of view, especially from a female perspective. I have collected red dirt from the land of my childhood home and of my ancestors homes. I like manipulating the surface and exploring the use of found objects. Narrative driven, the works remind me of film cells, crystallizing brief moments of a vanishing Agrarian lifestyle: Red dirt, sewing, stitching, pleasing, buttoned down, pinned down, rooted.

I was recently described as a Southern folk artist with a contemporary edge. I rather liked that."

The swirling symbol is actually a scientific model of deterministic nonperiodic flow, or strange attractor. I wanted to interpret chaotic oscillations where precise intention meets nonlinear dynamics leading to consequences of discovery. In other words, you start in one direction only to be affected by some unknown force and are led in a new direction. I like the whimsy of the resulting figure. Deterministic pinball. It encourages me.
